To ensure that the patrol vehicle's position is tracked and displayed accurately on the map, you must provide an odometry signal to the system. To do this, you can install an odometry sensor on the drive shaft of the vehicle.

Consider the following when planning your odometry sensor installation:

  • If your patrol vehicle has a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or Output Speed Sensor (OSS), it is recommended to tap into that sensor instead of installing an odometry sensor.
    NOTE: Some newer vehicles and electric vehicles do not include a VSS or OSS.
  • You can install the odometry sensor on front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive vehicles.
  • In the following procedure, you must attach four evenly-spaced magnets to the drive shaft. If additional magnets are required due to the structure of the drive shaft, such as a shaft with a hexagonal cross section, contact your AutoVu™ representative.
    IMPORTANT: If you are installing an odometry sensor to replace an existing magneto kit, you must remove the magneto kit magnets and install the magnets that are included with the odometry sensor.
  • An odometry sensor installation includes the following hardware components:
      Component
    A Magnets
    B Tie straps
    C Mounting bracket
    NOTE: The bracket in the image has been customized to fit the specific installation.
    D Odometry sensor
    E Bolt from the engine block or transmission case (or use self-tapping screws)
    F Odometry sensor cable
