To
communicate with a Modbus device, it must be added to Security Center.
Procedure
-
From the Config
Tool home page,
open the Plugins task.
-
Select the Modbus plugin role from the entity browser and click the
Devices tab.
-
Click Add device (
) and enter the following information:
- Name
- The name that you want to apply to the device.
- Device type
- The device template that you want to apply to the device.
These
templates are created on the Device types page
of the plugin, and are used to apply custom
states, data points, and actions to a device.
NOTE: If a device type
does not exist, you must manually add the custom states, data
points, and actions to the device.
- IP address
- The IP address of the device.
- Port
- The port used by the device.
- Unit ID
- The Modbus Unit ID given to the device.

-
In the Advanced Settings section, enter the
following:
- Data polling interval
- The
period
(in milliseconds) that
Security Center will poll
the device.
By
default, the polling interval is set to 500
milliseconds.
NOTE: The optimal polling interval
is
determined by your application and the number
of inputs
to
monitor. An industrial application, such as
monitoring the temperature of a volatile compound, requires
frequent
monitoring. Monitoring
the
temperature of the offices in a building
can
be done less
frequently.
The
smaller the polling interval, the more CPU resources the
plugin uses; consequently, the fewer rules and inputs a
single plugin can monitor. These settings
are limited by the processing power of the computer that
hosts the plugin.
- Address format
- The address format used in the user interface of the plugin. You can
choose between Decimal or
Hexadecimal.
- Optimize read requests
- When
Optimize
read requests is enabled,
a
read request can be set to poll multiple
properties on a Modbus device. For example, if you have a device
with 100 coils, instead of making 100 requests that read one coil
each, you can make one request to read 100 coils.
-
Click Apply.
Results
The device is displayed in the entity browser, nested under the Modbus plugin
role.
