To quickly configure the states, data points, events, and actions when adding multiple devices having the same properties to Security Center, you can create device types and use them as templates.

Before you begin

Make sure you have the data points you want to monitor for the device type your are creating.

What you should know

A device type is a set of common properties shared by multiple devices. Device types can be used as templates, but they are not templates. Devices created using a device type inherit the properties of the device type, such as protocol, states, data points, events, and actions. When you modify a device type, you modify all devices that inherit its properties.

Procedure

  1. From the Config Tool home page, open the Plugins task.
  2. Select the Industrial IoT plugin role and click the Device types tab.
  3. In the Device types section, click Add a device type ().
  4. Enter a name for the device type, select the protocol it uses, and click Add.
  5. In the Information section, select an icon for the device type.
  6. In the States section, select icons to indicate a state change on the device type.
  7. In the Data points section, add the data points that you want to monitor with this device type.
For more information, see the "Adding data points" topics for the types of devices you want under the "Adding devices and entities" chapter.
  8. For BACnet, Modbus, and OPC UA devices, in the Actions section, add the actions for writing on data points.
  9. For SNMP devices, in the Events section, add SNMP traps to the device.
  10. For TCP devices, add events that you want to trigger when a condition is met.
  11. Click Apply.

After you finish

  • (Optional) To save the device type as a .JSON file on your workstation, click Export.
  • Add the devices using the device type you created.
