Consider the following best practices when naming your entities in Security Center.

  • Use naming conventions that are consistent throughout your organization and document them to ensure that your users can easily find the entities they need.
  • Avoid special characters in entity names such as commas, semicolons, colons, exclamations marks, and white spaces. Special characters might cause problems when migrating data using an import or synchronizer tool.

Examples

  • Schedules: Use the time and days of the week that the schedule includes. Generic names like "Office hours" might be unclear for operators who are unfamiliar with your schedules.

    "Office hours 8-5 M-F" or "Office hours 8-12 1-5 M-F"

  • Entities that represent physical objects: Use the physical location, such as the city, building name, floor number, area name, or direction.

    Camera: "SUN_MAIN_1st-Floor_EntryCamera_SW"

    Door: "DOOR_3rd-Floor_ConferenceRoom2"

  • Camera encoders: Use the IP address and physical location of the unit. Only Config Tool users can see the encoders; Security Desk users only see the camera name.

    "192.254.176.65_4th-Floor_MainEntrance"

  • Archiver databases: Use the name of the associated Archiver role or computer. The maximum number of characters is 16. To include the IP address, you can add it in the Description field.
