For video units that use the Genetec™ Protocol, you can add the units using a Domain Name System (DNS) hostname instead of an IP address. This is useful when an encryption certificate cannot be created using an IP address as a common name.
Before you begin
- Make sure the hostname can be resolved before applying it in Security Center.
- If you change the IP address of a camera on the Properties page in Config Tool, the local IP is automatically changed on the device itself. However, the DNS server records are not changed. They must be updated with the new IP address, otherwise the camera might fail to connect.
- If the Archiver is unable to resolve the hostname used, it will try to connect using the last known IP address. Cameras using the HTTP protocol will not connect.
- After an upgrade to Security Center 5.6, units that were already using a hostname to connect automatically, have their hostname populated on the Properties page.
When you change the IP address that a hostname points to on your DNS server, it can take a few minutes for Security Center to get the new IP address.
What you should know
- From the Config Tool home page, open the Video task.
Click Add an entity ()
> Video unit.
The Manual add dialog box opens.
- Beside the IP address field, click Hostname.
- Enter the Hostname for the camera.
- Fill out the rest of the fields accordingly.
- Click Apply.
