[KBA-79051] Issue with configuration files during Security Center 5.9 upgrade

This article explains why you might encounter an issue with your configuration files while upgrading to Security Center 5.9.

Symptoms

If you upgrade to Security Center 5.9.0.0, 5.9.1.0, 5.9.2.0, or 5.9.3.0 and Security Center 5.7 was installed in the past, the 5.7 version of the configuration files are used during the upgrade. As a result, you lose any changes that were made to the configuration files in 5.8 or a previous version of 5.9 (such as the public IP, Directory database backup folder, the SMTP email address, and so on).

The following occurs during the upgrade:
Upgrade from 5.8 to 5.9
The configuration files from C:\Program Files (x86)\Genetec Security Center 5.7\ConfigurationFiles are used as the base for the files created in C:\Program Files (x86)\Genetec Security Center 5.9\ConfigurationFiles instead of the 5.8 files. If the 5.7 file path does not exist, the correct 5.8 files are used.
Upgrade from 5.9.x to 5.9.y
The configuration files from C:\Program Files (x86)\Genetec Security Center 5.7\ConfigurationFiles are used as the base for the files created in C:\Program Files (x86)\Genetec Security Center 5.9\ConfigurationFiles instead of the previous 5.9 files. If the 5.7 file path does not exist, the correct 5.9 files are used.
Upgrade from 5.9.x.a to 5.9.x.b
The configuration files are not upgraded so the issue does not affect patch versions.

Affected systems

Your configuration files are affected during the upgrade if the following three statements apply to your system:
  • Security Center 5.7 was previously installed but it is no longer the current version.
  • The system is running Security Center 5.8, 5.9.0.0, 5.9.1.0, or 5.9.2.0.
  • You made changes to the configuration files in version 5.8 or 5.9.

Cause

A coding issue.

Workaround

Do one of the following:
  • Before upgrading, rename the Security Center 5.7 installation folders.
Example: Rename C:\Program Files (x86)\Genetec Security Center 5.7\ConfigurationFiles to C:\Program Files (x86)\OLD Genetec Security Center 5.7\ConfigurationFiles.
NOTE: If the machine is still used as client in the upgraded system, you must revert the folder name after the upgrade is complete.
  • If you already upgraded your system, you can manually re-configure the customizations you need in the configuration files.

Status

This issue will be fixed in 5.9.4.0.
