[KBA-79032] PTZ patterns using Pelco D PTZ protocol not working after encoder reboot

This article explains why PTZ patterns of Axis Q7401 and Verint S1970e units stop working after the encoder reboots, if the PTZ camera is using the Pelco D PTZ protocol.

Symptoms

When a PTZ pattern is executed after an Axis Q7401 or Verint S1970e encoder reboots, the camera only moves to the first recorded position. You can create new patterns, but the camera continues to move to the first recorded position of the last PTZ pattern.

Cause

An external issue. On some analog cameras, you can configure Pelco D and Pelco P in the DIP switch simultaneously as PTZ protocols. In the PTZ addressing table, the address for Pelco D is 1 bit more than Pelco P. When PTZ positions are sent using Pelco D after an encoder reboot, the camera expects 1 less bit in the recorded PTZ pattern. As a result, the pattern does not execute and the camera moves to position 0.

Workaround

Change the PTZ protocol to Pelco P and add 1 to the PTZ address:
  1. From the home page in Config Tool, open the Video task.
  2. Select the camera and click the Hardware tab.
  3. Change the PTZ protocol to Pelco P.
  4. Enter the new PTZ address (the Pelco D PTZ address plus 1) and click Apply.
