[KBA-01374] HID OMNIKEY reader integration

This article explains how to modify configuration files to correctly configure an HID OMNIKEY reader with your devices.

Summary

When using an HID OMNIKEY reader, it is important that the reader is properly configured for use with your devices. To ensure that the reader is configured properly, you must modify a configuration file.

Find the OmnikeyReadersConfiguration.gconfig.xml file (found in the same folder as the ConfigTool.exe). If the file is empty, not found, or if the detected reader is not part of the configuration file, the default CardType is set to iClass.

Using a Prox reader

For a Prox reader, the configuration file must contain the following lines of code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<Readers>

  <Reader ModelFamily="OMNIKEY CardMan 5x25-CL">

    <SupportedCards>

      <Card Type="Prox" Bits="26"/>

    </SupportedCards>

  </Reader>

</Readers>

The number of Bits depends on the card used.

Using an iClass reader

For an iClass reader, the configuration file is optional because if the reader is not found in the file, the default card type is set to iClass.

To use the iClass reader to read serial numbers, the configuration file must contain the following lines of code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<Readers>

  <Reader ModelFamily="OMNIKEY CardMan 5x21-CL" ReadSerialNumber="True"/>

</Readers>

The ReadSerialNumber attribute default value is False if not provided, if the reader is not part of the file, or if the configuration file is missing.

Using Prox and iClass readers

To support a Prox reader and an iClass reader (to read serial numbers), the configuration file must contain the following lines of code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<Readers>

  <Reader ModelFamily="OMNIKEY CardMan 5x25-CL">

    <SupportedCards>

      <Card Type="Prox" Bits="26"/>

    </SupportedCards>

  </Reader>

  <Reader ModelFamily="OMNIKEY CardMan 5x21-CL" ReadSerialNumber="True"/>

</Readers>
To support a Prox reader and an iClass reader (but not for reading serial numbers), your configuration file does not need to contain the iClass information because it is there by default:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<Readers>

  <Reader ModelFamily="OMNIKEY CardMan 5x25-CL">

    <SupportedCards>

      <Card Type="Prox" Bits="26"/>

    </SupportedCards>

  </Reader>

</Readers>

Limitations

Works with:

  • Omnikey 5325 CL > For Prox
  • Omnikey 5321 v2 > For iClass
