[KBA-01409] Deactivating and reactivating basic authentication for HTTP communication between Config Tool and camera units

This article explains how to activate or deactivate basic authentication for the HTTP communication between Config Tool and camera units.

Summary

Starting in Security Center 5.3 SR3, an option was introduced in the Security Center InstallShield to deactivate basic authentication to ensure more secure communication between the Archiver and camera units. This setting is also applied to Config Tool services such as the Discovery Tool and the Firmware upgrade tool. You can manually activate or deactivate basic authentication for these Config Tool services by modifying GeneralSettings.gconfig.

More Information

To activate or deactivated basic authentication for your Config Tool services:

  1. On the machine where Config Tool is installed, open the C:\Program Files (x86)\Genetec Security Center 5.3\ConfigurationFiles\GeneralSettings.gconfig file for editing.

In GeneralSettings.gconfig, the refuseBasicAuthenticationDefault key will have a value of true or false, depending on the selection for basic authentication in the Security Center InstallShield.

  2. Change the value for refuseBasicAuthenticationDefault as required.
    • To activate basic authentication, enter false.
    • To deactivate basic authentication, enter true.
  3. Save your changes to GeneralSettings.gconfig.
  4. Restart Config Tool.
IMPORTANT: Reactivating basic authentication can compromise your camera passwords.

When basic authentication is deactivated, you can only upgrade the firmware on Verint units. Firmware upgrades will not work for other manufacturers.
