[KBA-01439] Unhandled exception when launching Security Center applications

This article explains why an unhandled exception error is raised when launching the following Security Center applications: Config Tool, Security Desk, and Migration Tool.

Summary

When launching Config Tool, Security Desk, or the Migration Tool, users receive the following unhandled exception:

An unhandled exception occurred, and the application is terminating.

System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040154): Retrieving the COM class factory for
component with CLSID {6BF52A52-394A-11D3-B153-00C04F79FAA6} failed due to the following error:
80040154 Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG)).

More Information

If the server that is experiencing this issue was recently upgraded from Windows 2012 to Windows 2012 R2, the Windows Desktop Experience feature is enabled, but it does not automatically enable Windows Media Player.

To resolve this issue, open the command prompt as administrator and enter the following command:

dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:MediaPlayback

After executing this command, the affected Security Center applications should launch correctly.
