[KBA-00169] RS485 port not recognized in Omnicast™ 4.x on Axis encoders

This article explains why there is no recognition of an RS485 port in Omnicast™ 4.x on Axis encoders with firmware 4.3x that supports RS485 connection.

Symptoms

You can detect all the Axis encoder features and the RS232 serial port, but not the RS485 port. As a result, users might be unable to use PTZ functionality. This issue affects Axis units that support RS485 and which can be upgraded to firmware 4.3x, like Axis 241x, 240x, 225FD, and 231x.

Cause

The serial setting on the web page might show the following options: Generic HTTP, TCP/IP, PTZ.

When the “Generic TCP/IP” settings are not selected under RS485 during the discovery of the Axis 241S unit, Omnicast™ is unable to detect the second serial port.

Workaround

  1. Enter the IP address of the encoder to access its web interface.
  2. Click Setup > System Options > Ports & Devices > RS485.
  3. Set the Port 0 usage option value to Generic TCP/IP.
  4. Save the changes.
  5. Remove the unit from Archiver.
  6. After the unit becomes red, delete the unit.
  7. Rediscover the unit.

The second serial port should be discovered.

If your problem persists, you can try performing a factory reset on the unit.
