[KBA-00420] Multicast flooding while using Omnicast™ 4.x

This article explains why the network is sometimes flooded with multicast traffic in Omnicast™ 4.x, and what the possible solutions are.

Symptoms

Depending on the networking environment, the multicast traffic might not be managed properly by networking equipment. This can cause undesired effects like multicast traffic flooding the network, video pixelation, bandwidth consumption, and links going down (especially on wireless networks).

Cause

Omnicast™ is configured to use multicast as the default delivery method for video. When configured properly, multicast can save a lot of resources on the system. However, when multicast is not desired, the default Omnicast™ configuration has to be changed to adapt to the network environment.

Most of the time, the multicast traffic floods are caused by switches and routers not being properly configured to handle multicast streams.

Workaround

To stop the multicast traffic floods, do one of the following:
  • Configure the networking equipment (switches and routers) to handle multicast properly.
  • Set the Omnicast™ Gateway to Unicast UDP only to completely stop multicast traffic in your system.
