Summary

Microsoft SQL Express and SQL Server 2005 are based on the same core database engine. They are new versions of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) and SQL Server 2000.

Applications developed for SQL Express are compatible with SQL Server 2005 and vice versa.
