There are many cases of Wiegand installations for different manufacturers in Synergis™ systems. For the purpose of this document, only HID and Mercury setups are used as examples.

The following configurations are general guidelines. It is assumed that the recommended wiring was used for the installation of Wiegand readers. If the recommended wiring was not used, the conclusions and recommendations of this technote might not be applicable.

For more detailed reader wiring and pinout information, see the reader manufacturer’s documentation and the Synergis™ Cloud Link Hardware Installation Guide.

HID installations

Synergis™ systems support the HID VertX V100 as Wiegand reader interfaces. The VertX V100 does not support OSDP readers itself, but you can re-route the multi-conductor cable from the VertX V100 interface to the RS-485 ports of a Synergis™ Cloud Link unit, which supports OSDP readers.

It is recommended to use red and black wires for power, connected directly to the fuse assembly (spare fuse), and any other pair of wires for the RS-485 signals, as shown in the following diagram:

  • Place end-of-line (EOL) terminations on the first and last device of the RS-485 daisy chain.
EOL terminations are integrated in the Synergis™ Cloud Link as DIP switches. Readers do not have built-in terminations unless stated by the manufacturer.
NOTE: Always set the switches to ON when connecting a device to the RS-485 port.
  • Place a 120 ohm resistor between the minus (-) and plus (+) of the RS-485 signal, as close to the reader as possible.

Mercury installations

Mercury controllers and I/O interfaces support both Wiegand and RS-485 readers. Because both Wiegand and RS-485 use the same reader port, and power is drawn from the reader port, wiring reuse is straightforward. Only by swapping the reader and keeping the same connections on the Mercury board side.

  • Place EOL terminations on the first and last device of the RS-485 daisy chain.

Mercury interfaces and controllers do not have built-in terminations.

  • Place a 120 ohm resistor between the TR+ and TR- pins of the reader port.
  • Place a 120 ohm resistor between the minus (-) and plus (+) of the RS-485 signal, as close to the reader as possible.
