[KBA-00014] Cannot connect to SmartSight unit CLI in Omnicast™

This article explains how to start a CLI session to connect to your Verint SmartSight unit for the first time when installing it.

Summary

When installing a Verint SmartSight unit, you might have to connect to the unit by starting a CLI session. There are two ways of connecting to the CLI of a SmartSight unit:
  • Telnet to the unit
  • Use a serial connection

Telnet to the unit

Telneting is the easiest way to connect to a unit. You need to know the IP address of the unit to use this method. If you do not know the IP address, you must use a serial connection.

  1. In Windows, click Start > Run.
  2. Type telnet <IP ADDRESS>
  3. Click OK.

Use a serial connection

To connect to the unit using a serial connection, you need a male-to-female, 9-pin serial cable. Make sure it is not a null modem (crossed).

  1. Connect the female end of the serial cable to a COM port in the back of your computer.
  2. Connect the male end of the serial cable to the SmartSight unit.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • If you have the SmartSight Configurator:
      1. Start the SmartSight Configurator.
      2. Click Console.
      3. Select the COM port you used to connect the serial cable to your computer. If you do not know it, you can find it by trial and error.
      4. Click Connect.
    • If you do not have the SmartSight Configurator:
      1. Open HyperTerminal.

This can be found in Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications.

If it is the first time you run HyperTerminal, you might have to answer a few questions.

      2. When the Connection Description dialog opens, type SmartSight, or any other name you want to enter.
      3. Choose the COM port. and set the following options:
        Bits per second
        115200
        Data bits
        8
        Parity
        None
        Stop bits
        1
        Flow control
        None
      4. If you made a mistake in the configuration, you can change it by doing the following:
        1. From the menu bar, click Call > Disconnect.
        2. From the menu bar, click File > Properties.

Troubleshooting

If you still cannot connect to the CLI:
  1. Perform a factory reset on the unit:
    1. Power off the SmartSight unit.
    2. Remove the serial cable from the unit.
    3. Connect pins 3 and 8 of the serial connector on the unit.
    4. Start the unit and wait for 30 seconds.
    5. Remove the connection between pins 3 and 8.

Now the unit has DHCP enabled, and its VSIP port is 5510.

  2. Run a VSIP Search:
NOTE: You can only perform this step if you have a DHCP server. If you do not have a DHCP server, contact the Genetec™ Technical Assistance Center.
    1. Run VSIP Search, which is located in the directory where the Server was installed.
    2. Click Run in VSIP Search.

This lists all units in the broadcast range. If you find the new unit, take note of its IP address so you can telnet to it using the instructions in the previous section.

If you still cannot connect to the CLI, contact the Genetec™ Technical Assistance Center.
