To ensure the best ALPR results using Flexreader™, you should configure the recommended camera settings.

The number of cameras that can be supported depends greatly on the specifications of the system as well as the configuration of the cameras. The following information demonstrates the relationship between different IP camera settings and the requirements of the installation.

Camera setting / installation feature Effects

Increased resolution

Advantages:
  • Increased reading distance
  • Better performance with motorcycle (small) license plates

Disadvantages:

  • Increased processing power required

Increased frame rate

Advantages:
  • Increased plate capture rate

Disadvantages:

  • Increased processing power required

Increased shutter speed

Advantages:
  • Increased detection speed
  • Reduced image blur

Disadvantages:

  • Reduced ambient light on the camera. This could reduce the capture rate and/or the perfect read rate.

Increased illumination

Advantages:
  • Improved performance in low-light environments

Disadvantages:

  • Increased hardware cost
Adjust the camera's max gain level Advantages:
  • Prevents high noise levels in the images
  • Prevents overexposure of the license plates in the images.
Use a black-and-white image for ALPR
Tip: To configure the camera for a black-and-white image in the camera's configuration webpage, turn off the IR cut filter or set the color level to 0 and adjust the contrast manually.
Advantages:
  • Better contrast in the ALPR image
  • Reduced processing power required

Increased bit rate

Advantages:
  • Reduced compression artifacts
  • Increased performances for plate reads and direction of travel

Disadvantages:

  • Increased bandwidth

Slower vehicle speed

Advantages:
  • ALPR is possible with a lower frame rate, which reduces the required processing power.

Confined vehicle path

Advantages:
  • By drawing a region of interest for the confined vehicle path you can reduce the required processing power while maintaining high resolution.
Configured capture trigger Advantages:
  • Images are only processed when a vehicle activates the trigger. This greatly reduces the required processing power on the server.
